Atlanta Gas Light is proud to be part of the greater Atlanta community and provide natural gas service on behalf of certified marketers to the millions of people who call it home. To ensure the continuing safety and reliability of Atlanta Gas Light’s pipeline system, older pipes are being replaced with state-of-the-art plastic and steel pipes. These enhancements are part of our Pipeline Replacement Program (PRP), a 15-year project that started in 1998 to replace more than 2,700 miles of bare, or unprotected, steel and cast-iron natural gas pipeline in Georgia.
Construction of the Eastside Pipeline began in the second half of 2012 and is expected to continue through the end of 2013. The new 24-inch coated steel transmission line will replace a pipe that was installed in the early 1950s. The alignment is approximately 28 miles and runs from our Riverdale liquefied natural gas facility in Clayton County to a connection point in our transmission system near the intersection of Buford Highway and Clairmont Road in DeKalb County.
We anticipate continued, intermittent activity along the pipeline alignment for the duration of the project and possibly into the first quarter of 2014, even in areas where the new pipe has been installed. The activity will be related to the decommissioning (or retiring from service) of the old gas line once the new transmission line goes into service.
Atlanta Gas Light has notified all property owners along the route about construction and continues to work with individuals as well as community groups to keep those living and working in areas affected by the installation informed of our progress.
As with all of our construction projects, safety is our top priority. Great care will be taken in all phases of the project to ensure proper installation from beginning to end in each neighborhood. This includes quality checks by going into areas previously disturbed and restored and inspecting for superior operation quality. We will make every effort to minimize inconveniences to property owners along the route.
