Vintage Plastic Replacement Program
The Vintage Plastic Replacement Program (“Vintage Plastic”) is an investment in the distribution system serving homes and businesses in the metro Atlanta area and other service areas across the state that was approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) in August 2013. Vintage Plastic involves replacing approximately 750 miles of plastic pipe installed between 1965 and 1983 with the majority installed before 1974.
Replacing the older vintage plastic pipe with newer, technologically advanced plastic pipe with a longer useful life will help ensure an even safer and more reliable natural gas pipeline system. Atlanta Gas Light was one of the first gas utilities in the nation to begin a comprehensive pipeline replacement program. Our 15-year Pipeline Replacement Program (PRP) completed in 2013 replaced more than 2,700 miles of bare steel pipe across the state and became a model replacement program for utilities across the country.
How This Program May Affect Your Neighborhood
If a Vintage Plastic Replacement project is planned for your neighborhood, you will receive a letter before work begins and additional notification if the work directly affects your property. While work is in progress, there may be temporary inconveniences to residents, but we strive to minimize impacts in your community during construction.
The process starts with the replacement of the gas main and may also include replacement or transfer of service lines to individual homes and businesses. In order to complete the work, gas service to those impacted homes and businesses will have to be turned off for a short period of time. An authorized contractor or qualified service representative will schedule a time with the property owner to enter the home or business and relight all working appliances that operate on natural gas once the service connection is complete. Property owners should NOT attempt to relight their own pilot lights.
Our authorized contractors also handle property restoration as the project progresses with final cleanup once it is finished.
The time it takes to complete each project depends upon a variety of factors, including the amount of pipe being replaced, the weather, the location of existing utilities, etc. Atlanta Gas Light makes every effort to complete each project as quickly and efficiently as possible.
