Gas Marketers to Issue $34 Million refund from Atlanta Gas Light Company

April 17, 2000

Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) today announced a refund of approximately $34 million--which will be issued by current gas marketers--to the utility's former retail customers.

Eligible customers will receive a refund of approximately $26. Gas marketers will pass the refund along to customers during the May/June billing cycle. The refund will be noted on customers' bills as a "GA PSC Ordered Credit," which will be deducted from the total amount owed for service for the particular billing period.

The money being refunded is the surplus in AGLC's Purchased Gas Cost account as of October 1999, when virtually all of the company's customers had switched to buying their natural gas from competing gas marketers. The Georgia Public Service Commission (GPSC) approved the refund earlier this year.

Purchased Gas Cost (PGC) is the price that AGLC was allowed by the GPSC to charge customers for natural gas. It includes the commodity cost of gas plus the costs for pipeline transportation, storage services, fuel loss and pipeline surcharges. This refund closes out AGLC's role in buying and selling natural gas in the state of Georgia.

"This completes Atlanta Gas Light Company's exit from buying and selling gas for retail customers in Georgia," said Hank Linginfelter, Vice President - Rates and Regulations, Atlanta Gas Light Company. "This activity is now managed by the various gas marketers."

Linginfelter added that he was "very pleased with the level of cooperation AGLC received from the Georgia Public Service Commission and their staff throughout the process of determining how to facilitate the refund."

There are two requirements for a customer to be eligible to receive the refund: 1) the customer had to be receiving gas service from AGLC or a marketer on May 25, 1999; and 2) the customer had to be a customer of a marketer on April 3, 2000.

Customers who are not in good credit standing with AGLC shall have their refund amount used first to reimburse AGLC amounts owed by the customer. Once the customer's AGLC debt is cleared, any remaining credits will be issued to the customer from the marketer.

Customers who have additional questions about the refund process should contact their respective gas marketer.
