Atlanta Gas Light Company Ready for Cold Weekend

January 17, 2003

ATLANTA, Ga. - Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC), which delivers natural gas to many Georgians' homes and businesses, says it is prepared for the expected cold weather this weekend and will have all field crew personnel available to make sure customers will be able to stay warm.

Extra field crews will be on standby over the holiday weekend to ensure natural gas is delivered to Georgians in the AGLC service area safely and efficiently. These crews also will be available to turn on gas service for those customers who may not currently be connected, provided they have made the appropriate arrangements with their natural gas marketer.

Customers who experience problems with their natural gas heat over the weekend should call AGLC at 770-994-1946 in the metro Atlanta area, or 1-800-427-5463 outside the metro area.

Isaac Blythers, AGLC president, said "there is plenty of natural gas in the AGLC system to get Georgians through this colder-than-normal winter.

"However, if you have any problems, call us and we will dispatch a crew to investigate," Blythers said.

Blythers also urged consumers to use caution when operating or adjusting heating appliances. He said anyone who suspects a natural gas leak should leave the premises immediately and call AGLC at 770-994-1946 in the metro area or 1-800-427-5463 outside the metro area.

Natural gas is colorless and odorless, so a substance called mercaptan is added to give gas a distinctive "rotten egg" smell. While natural gas is non-toxic, it is combustible, said Blythers.
