AGL Resources And Atlanta Gas Light Present Mayor Franklin With 500 Blankets To Help Keep Atlanta’s Homeless Community Warm

ATLANTA – (Business Wire) – Dec. 16, 2005 – Representatives of AGL Resources (NYSE: ATG) and Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) this morning presented Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin with 500 colorful fleece blankets at the 24/7 Gateway Center, which she in turn distributed to several Atlanta area homeless organizations, including the 24/7 Gateway Center, the Atlanta Union Mission and its facility which provides services to women and children, My Sister’s House.

Platt also mentioned that the success of this program would not be possible without the generous support of the program’s vendors, Hancock Fabrics on Piedmont Road in Atlanta (who supplied the fleece material) and McJunkin Corporation (who distributed the fleece material) to make all 2,500 blankets.

What started in 2003 by Barbara Thomas, AGL Resources executive assistant who works closely with Platt, as a way to help a few homeless men and women stay warm in Atlanta, has blossomed into a company-wide program where some 2,500 blankets were made over the past several weeks. The blankets – made by AGL Resources employee and retiree volunteers – from New Jersey to Florida and to Texas – are being donated to shelters helping the homeless throughout the AGL Resources’ service territory.

Accepting hundreds of blankets from the mayor, Coleman said: “We are grateful to AGL Resources and Atlanta Gas Light for helping Atlanta Union Mission to provide warmth and comfort to homeless people in Atlanta. As operators of the 24/7 Gateway Center, the Mission is excited that more people in need will benefit from this gift of warmth.”

In addition to donating the blankets, AGL on November 9, 2005 presented $315,000 in energy assistance grants to four Georgia social service organizations.

• H.E.A.T., Inc. - $150,000 for energy assistance;
• Resource Service Ministries - $75,000 for replacing or refurbishing furnaces;
• Sullivan Center - $50,000 for energy assistance;
• United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta - $40,000 for the agency's 211 referral program.

The AGL corporate funds are earmarked to help low-income elderly Georgians stay warm this winter by providing heating bill assistance as well as new furnaces and/or natural gas water heaters.

"We are doing everything we can to manage costs and deliver reliable supplies, working with governmental agencies and energy assistance organizations to help those in need," said Sitherwood. "We want our customers to do everything possible to maximize energy efficiency through conservation and weatherization to minimize their bills.”

AGL also recently launched the $1 million Home and Heart Warming Project - a joint effort with the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority and Resource Service Ministries to assist qualified Georgia families in repairing or replacing their non-functioning furnaces, water heaters, and when necessary for safety reasons, cook top and stove units.
