Atlanta Gas Light employees celebrate Earth Day

April 22, 2009

ATLANTA – April 22, 2009 -- Atlanta Gas Light employees will celebrate Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens with a special day-long event, "Earth Day at the Garden".
Atlanta Gas Light volunteers will be stationed at various points throughout the gardens. Volunteers will oversee various children's activities including a recycling relay, seed planting and a frog jump.  The event includes fun, earth-inspired activities, drop in exploration stations and opportunities to learn about Garden conservation programs.
Earth Day was established to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment, with the goal of a healthy, sustainable environment including the promotion of clean energy.

“As a natural gas company, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment.” said Suzanne Sitherwood, president, Atlanta Gas Light. “Our employees who participate in Earth Day initiatives reflect that commitment to our community.”

Earth Day is also a good reminder to Atlanta Gas Light customers to implement a home energy audit. An audit will show how much energy a home consumes. Discovering and correcting efficiency problems can save a home owner significant amounts of money over time and reduce their carbon footprint.

“By using high efficiency natural gas appliances, Atlanta Gas Light customers are already reducing their impact on the environment,” said Sitherwood.

According to the Department of Energy, homes using natural gas appliances produce about 40 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than homes using electric appliances for these services.
