Natural gas is the most popular form of home heating in the United States – capturing 70 percent of the new single-family home market for the past few years. Homeowners prefer natural gas heat because it’s comfortable, convenient, reliable and efficient. Today’s heating systems offer a variety of efficiency choices to homeowners. The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE), or the ratio between the amount of energy that goes into the system and the amount of energy that comes out as usable heat, is a measure of a unit’s efficiency. The higher the AFUE, the more efficient the furnace – and the higher the energy savings and the lower the environmental impact. New furnaces operate at 78 percent efficiency or better; some high-efficiency natural gas heating systems use 98 percent of their energy input. With the array of choices available today, each household can choose an AFUE to meet their needs.
When outside temperatures drop, many homeowners find that an electric heat pump is less effective at heating the house than a natural gas furnace. Air circulated by a natural gas furnace can be as much as 25 degrees warmer than that of an electric heat pump.
