Manufactured Gas Plant Site Restoration

From the 1830s to the 1950s, before natural gas was widely available, gas was manufactured from coal and other fuels for use primarily as lighting in many communities.

The manufactured gas plants (MGPs) were marvels of technology, even by today's standards, but their operations left byproducts and residues at the sites, located in Athens, Augusta, Brunswick, Griffin, Macon, Rome, Savannah, Valdosta and Waycross.

We worked with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) and with the local communities to investigate the sites and to design and implement cleanup programs.  Today, all nine sites have been remediated and restored to productive use, stimulating more than $200 million in economic revitalization.

Our aggressive MGP cleanup program is a reflection of our commitment to the health and safety of the communities we serve. The remediated MGP sites present no significant threat to human health or the environment. AGL will continue to monitor and test groundwater according to each site's state-approved program. The EPD supervised the cleanups, which met state requirements.
